Nigga Please-12/24/09 Lupe Fiasco

I was always a fan of the Nigga Please section of the XXL Magazine. As the internet becomes increasingly popular among rappers, entertainers, & athletes I find myself reading something every other day which makes me cringe at the way people think. Thus I think I’ll be doing this quite often.

Rtoda’s Hip Hop Trends That Need to End in 2009

Posted by Rtoda @ 10:32 pm | Dec 21, 2009 | Posted under music discussion, real talk

There’s a number of current trends in Hip Hop that need to end in 2009.

1.) Hip Hop Illuminati: Online Hip Hop fan’s obsession with the Illuminati has to end now. While rappers have been making Illuminati references since the early 90s some how over the past few years, hip hop fans online have started paying more attention to bogus conspiracy theories than actually listening to music. Most notably, Jay-Z is tied to the Illuminati using the most overblown, drawn out, & ridiculous claims I’ve ever heard in my life. I’m still appalled that somehow people believe that the most powerful people in the world have a secret society and are using a rapper from Marcy Projects to brainwash the world….. yet somehow there’s dozens of homemade documentaries & forum post on the internet with this information. How secret is this info if everyone already knows? One of these documentaries which will remain unnamed by me, contains miss spelled words & incorrect grammar all over the cover. Who made these wack ass home made documentaries a reputable source? I’m aware that our government does a significant amount of things which we will never know the answers to but people, please stop being so gullible. This is not the enlightenment in which you are seeking. Continue reading »

Rakim felt disrespected by “Unauthorized Biography”

Posted by Rtoda @ 9:53 pm | Oct 27, 2009 | Posted under music discussion, videos

Rakim’s thoughts on Nas’ Unauthorized Biography of Rakim ((off Streets Disciple, 2004) is so interesting to me and I’m actually quite amazed that Rakim actually took offense to this song. I remember there was a rumor that there was supposed to be a video for this song and it was canceled when Rakim didn’t show up to the video shoot. Then later on he makes a cameo in the Juelz Santana Mic Check video. So Rakim can appear in a random Juelz Santana video but he can’t appear in a video of a song that worships him?

One of the biggest problems that Hip Hop has is a lack of respect for those who came before them, yet it seems as though the few times people do pay tribute other rappers, they’re shitted on for it. (see Kanye West: Big Brother) I can understand how it would be weird for NaS to not contact Rakim after doing the song, but I’m surprised that Rakim is not honored by the song.  I just can’t see NaS having any ulterior motives for doing the song. Had NaS done the unauthorized biography of KRS-One like he planned on doing, KRS-One would be ecstatic. Hip Hop kills me sometimes.  You can’t even honor someone who inspired you without getting into some sort of beef. It’s amazing to hear this interview then look back to the June 2006 MTV interview in which Rakim referred to the song as the “Ultimate Compliment”. I’m convinced Rakim is phony and/or jealous of the success NaS has had in the game using a style that he influenced.

“that song put things in perspective, nas is someone i respect and hes on a high plateua. he took time out to show me love. for somebody as big as nas to show ra’ love made me feel good”-Rakim I’m not sure if the embed video is still working but please check out this link if it’s not. http://www.mtv.com/videos/news/83903/the-ultimate-compliment.jhtml#id=1529705

Let’s Be Real: The Roc was NEVER a dynasty

jay-z-rocafella

A lot of times in hip hop an artist presents a word or a statement and the public actually takes it as factual information. One of the biggest examples of this is the bold proclamation that Roca-fella Records was a Dynasty like no other. What I’m saying is taking nothing away from the success that Rocafella had in their prime. I’d be happy to gain half the success Rocafella had. Being from Philly, it was clear that Roca-fella was the top label in the early 2000’s after the decline of Ruff Ryders, No Limit Death Row, Bad Boy, nonetheless they were a label carried by Jay-Z on the music side & carried by Dame on the business side. With Amil & Memphis Bleek (Still, I always believed Bleek was one hit away & hotter than most rappers out today) on the front lines, I always felt it was disrespectful to to consider Rocafella a Dynasty in the midst of other labels who had multiple superstars. The Chronic-Relit & Unreleased Tracks

dr-dre-the-chronic-re-lit-and-from-the-vault-remastered

One of my favorite albums of all time is being digitally remastered and released, tomorrow September 1st. The Chronic re-release, titled The Chronic Re-Lit, will include four unreleased bonus tracks as well as a DVD of never before seen video footage of Dr. Dre and other artists. I have more than enough copies of the Chronic in my house so while I’m not particularly excited about the re-release of the album, I am excited about the bonus tracks all which are posted below. While usually I would never post a whole retail album, I’m posting this because it truly bothers me and breaks my heart that the infamous Death Row Records is owned by a Jewish Soccer Mom by the name of Lara Lavi. While it’s not her fault that Suge Knight couldn’t handle his business properly, it’s just disheartening that one of the most prominent black owned labels of all time, a label that was built upon being the “realest since kumbaya” is now in the hands of someone who wasn’t responsible for putting in any work.

Rock the Boat-Hip Hop Urban Legends Part 1

Posted by Rtoda @ 7:14 pm | Aug 25, 2009 | Posted under music discussion

aaliyahripvibesourcemag

Today was the 8th Anniversary of the passing of Aaliyah. Sadly, the death of Aaliyah is now responsible for one of the biggest urban legends in the history of hip hop. Back in 2001, Rocafella and D-Block engaged in a lyrical battle which had the streets on the edge of their seat. On the now infamous Jigga That Nigga Freestyle Jadakiss stated….

Industry Hoes

Posted by Rtoda @ 1:47 pm | Aug 21, 2009 | Posted under music discussion

industryhoes

industryhoe2

I was browsing some old Source magazines, most notably the July 1996 issue in which Dr. Dre announces that he’s leaving Death Row Records. I came across a quote which summed up the biggest problem I’ve had with hip hop in the new millennium. In the early 90s there seemed to be an art to collaborating with other artists and producers. If you weren’t weren’t on the same vibe or you weren’t feeling an artist or producer or and vice versa, you weren’t fucking with them. Now a days you have all sorts of weird collaborations that don’t make sense at all. As Dr. Dre summed it up, everyone has become a “industry hoe”. Anyone who can pay for your services can get a verse or a beat. Am I really supposed to believe Rick Ross & NaS want to work together? They don’t even  match up well. Whether it’s the labels putting two artist together just because or there’s veteran hip hop artists that work with a younger artist who recently blew just to remain relevant, I’m not feeling it. Ever notice how every new artist that has blown up within the last 5 years or so, Jay-Z has done a track with them right away. (Lupe, Drake, Kid Cudi, Rick Ross, Jeezy, etc) For anyone who saw the Jim Jones Documentary, Cam’ron first realized this when Jay decided to put a verse on the Oh Boy remix after it reached number 1 (despite the fact that he wasn’t really fucking with them before hand). I’m not knocking anyone for getting their money, because shit if I was on, I’d do the same thing, but I’ve come to recognize that this trend is the fault of the artist. There aren’t many people who would step up like Cam’ron and tell the engineer to delete a Jay-Z verse, just like there aren’t too many artist like 50 cent who would use the formula of fucking with smaller hungrier producers as opposed to working with the hottest new producer on billboard. This is something I’ve noticed though, you can agree or disagree, but w/e. That’s my opinion and I’m sticking to it.

MTV Hottest MC’s In the Game

Posted by Rtoda @ 6:48 am | Aug 10, 2009 | Posted under music discussion

The “Hottest MCs in the Game” is back! It’s highly regarded, extremely controversial and bolder than ever. We’re proud to announce that starting next Monday (August 17), we’ll begin to reveal our list of hip-hop’s top 10 kings of 2009 on MTVNews.com. This one is going to be a doozy!

As always, the MTV News Hip-Hop Brain Trust has been keeping a close collective eye and ear to the game. We’ve been watching who’s been moving the needle on the culture, who has impacted the game with superior skill, unmatched style and uncannily superior execution with their art and business. It’s not just music — it’s about a movement. The Brain Trust sequestered ourselves and deliberated a ranking, and the results will begin to be revealed next week — with the unveiling of the top spot happening on Diddy’s “Making His Band” airing August 24 at 10 p.m.

I don’t know whether to be excited to or to hate on it. They seem to be somewhat with their list, but it’s clear the list is based more on popularity & buzz than skill. Anyway I’m looking forward to this simply so I can rip it apart after the list drops.
